Second Child
2D Drawn Animation
Second Child was my first short film with the concept, pre-production, animation and post-production work all created entirely by myself in my second year at the UCA, Farnham.
This film has a semi-autobiographical theme, which evolved to tell a story where more attention was paid to an older son than daughter. There is a strong focus to the narrative to create an intrigue with the viewer by concealing the girl’s face. This displays her detachment from the family, forming a distance aesthetically to the viewer, yet emotionally drawing them in.
The main feature of Second Child was the design and style, looking in particular at the use of colour and the atmosphere it can create. I overlayed coloured chalk smudges on the daughter using After Effects to show her changing moods in the scene.
Strong influences were found in illustrator Edward Gorey, with his similar detailed sketchy style that focuses on the perspective of young children; and also Michael Dudok de Wit's animated film Father and Daughter.
