Films

Chops is one of my second year films from my Animation Degree, created using live-action footage of friends and family.

Synopsis

An experimental film on eating, focusing on mouths using editing and sound.

Treatment

Choosing to focus on mouths, this film attempts to portray my own phobias and disgusts with the way people eat and the movement of tongues. This film was made for people with similar phobias and any audience that can relate to watching someone else scoff food.

Aims for Chops were to learn the most about editing footage and clips together and working on constructing a similarly complex soundtrack. By using various compilation programs such as Adobe After Effects and Final Cut, the film was created through several stages of filming, exploring a journey of cutting down hours of different recordings to achieve the best result.

Studying the work of Tim Webb’s 15th February previously I was influenced by the use of his repetitive techniques alongside the up closeness of the face revealing raw detail. As well as this, at first a combination of rotoscoping and textures were used to distort the appearance however, choosing to focus on the main aims themselves these were discarded helping to accomplish a more complete edit in the end. Further inspiration for the development was from the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry, 2004). The film tried to adapt similar build up of techniques of the layers of sound getting more and more distorted along with the quick cuts between the three people to lead to the use of silence and a gap in sound, adding a contrast to the mishmash of different chewing.

Chops allowed me to develop my skills and has given me a new spirit to look more into the editing side as a career and helped to reinstate my own musical background for my next film.
